Network Engineer

Hosted Solutions is looking for an experienced Network Engineer at the Raleigh Data Center. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 6 years experience in designing and supporting carrier class networks. In-depth knowledge of Internet networking, routing, Cisco/Juniper hardware, is required along with a current certification. Candidates must have impeccable written and verbal communication skills and have a minimum of 4 years experience with direct customer support.

A bachelor's degree in engineering or an equivalent 6 - 8 years progressive experience within a technical support role is required. The ideal candidate will posses an in-depth knowledge of the networking along with successful and demonstrable experience implementing complex network architectures. The candidate must additionally have a broad exposure to Unix operating systems and prior experience implementing Internet based business applications. Preference will be given to candidates having direct sales support and customer support experience in addition to the technical requirements.

Duties will include technical support, management of multiple on-going projects, sales support, direct participation in complex service turn-up's, enhancement of operations practices, proactive problem resolution and on-call support responsibilities. Duties will additionally involve tracking performance, utilization, platform growth, and adherence to service metrics for assigned customers. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Traffic monitoring and projections - internal & external traffic
  • Technology research (Shared infrastructure, Load Balancer's, Firewall, other)
  • Implement new technologies- transition and train operations staff
  • Manage support relationships
  • Ensure appropriate levels of spares
  • Document, review and enhance network topology and performance
  • Maintain and enhance vendor relationships
  • Mentor and develop key personnel
  • Define and document skills based access to network infrastructure (i.e. Ops Tech 1, Ops Engineer, Sr. Eng levels of access)
  • Ensure standards and process compliance with network engineering standards and processes - Raleigh Data Center, Charlotte Data Center, Boston Data Center, Cary Data Center
  • Serve as focal point for all network escalations and complex problem resolution
  • Review network support tickets and evaluate staff efficiency and effectiveness
  • Develop training and enhancement programs for junior, intermediate and senior network staff
  • Industry / Competitive products and managed services analysis
  • Oversee and deliver network support in accordance with Hosted Solutions network services
  • Design, configuration, and deployment of new network environment services and enhancements to include routing, switching, firewall, and load balancing solutions.
  • Serve as a senior data center resource for escalations and complex problem resolution.
  • Willingness to participate in off-hours maintenance activities, possibly including some travel.
  • Interacting with sales staff and potential customers to help define solutions for Internet based businesses.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Enterprise/Carrier class network switches and routers. Preferably Cisco. JunOS or Riverstone experience a plus.
  • Layer 2 switching including STP, ARP, 802.1q VLANs.
  • eBGP and iBGP, OSPF area architectures, and redistribution of OSPF, BGP, and Static routes.
  • Firewall and remote access solutions including Access-lists, NAT, SSL and IPSEC VPNs, preferably on Checkpoint, BSD, or Net Screen platforms.
  • Load balancing solutions.
  • Packet analysis.
  • Familiarity with Linux and Windows OS Fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of scripting or programming languages, preferably Perl & Python
  • Working knowledge of monitoring and management infrastructures.
  • In-depth knowledge of Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies.
  • Understanding of Domain Name Service (DNS) and Access Control Lists (ACL's).
  • Working knowledge of IP addressing and subnets, routing protocols, firewalls, and load balancing desired.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical projects
  • Must be able to follow established processes and procedures.
