On what he does:

"I provide management services and consulting for customers running Microsoft SQL Server."

On what makes him smile:

"Every time I please a customer. For example, one of my customers, who didn't have DBA services when I started, came on board two months later and is now a satisfied managed customer."

On his experience:

"I've worked with SQL Servers as a developer and/or DBA for nearly 20 years, and in a primary DBA role for over 10 years. As a DBA I once traveled extensively to the UK, Malawi and Zimbabwe. At ChannelAdvisor, I grew a production system from one database server to more than 50 in six years. As a database architect- DBA, I designed the schema for a new application written for BuildLinks, an online services provider. I optimized their existing applications and designed the schema for a new application written from scratch. All good stuff."

On his 'shared' server:

"When I'm not working at Hosted Solutions, you can find me at home spending time with my wife or working on various projects on our home computer."

On his dream vacation spot:

"I'm proud to work in what is one of the most critical components of computer infrastructure—the database system. It's the one layer that all higher level components rely on—the web site, the user application, the reporting systems, etc. I do everything I can to ensure that our customers' database systems are built with the highest possible levels of uptime and redundancy. I know I've succeeded when a day goes by with no support issues, and even more so when these types of days become the norm. I'm always working behind the scenes to improve our product offering."

On customer challenges he can help with:

"Let me give you an example. Queries on a particular customer's server started suddenly timing out and causing web site issues. Compounding the troubleshooting was the timing: it was the middle of the day and the site was handling peak traffic, creating additional load to flood in on top of the already overloaded server. I worked with the customer over the course of several hours. We identified the root problems and stabilized their system. Shortly thereafter, we migrated their databases onto a new high-end SQL cluster. They haven't seen any repeats of this issue."
